You may be aware that Jodie shoots with me at all weddings, covering the ceremony & afterwards. This has many benefits as we can cover two things concurrently or the same thing from two different viewpoints. We can shoot something as it happens & also shoot the reaction to it by loved ones/family/friends etc. It becomes about anticipation & communication – much like the art of wedding photography itself.
I have an example to show you & it is a bit outside what I have just said but nonetheless will make you smile. During Sophie & Rodney’s Southport wedding in 2009 we had arrived at the the Kerle family home & I had gone straight outside to organise some family formals while Jodie hang about inside, observing quietly the goings on. Sophie’s father David, one of Australia’s most respected urological surgeons, & his father were in the lounge room together. David’s father was at the time suffering from Alzheimers Disease & through the day had mostly not been in total cognition. Then, without warning, he saw his son, recognised him, & shouted his name while they warmly embraced just like a father & son who had not seen each other for a long, long while.
It visibly moved everybody in the room, some to tears. Jodie said it was like David reverted to being a young boy again in the way he smiled & felt the enveloping warmth of his fathers hug. Me ? I had no idea it had happened, as I was outside running around with a sheet of paper in my hands. And I would never have known of it either had Jodie not been there.
The upshot is that if you don’t see something happen then it may as well not have. But it’s a nice thought to think you may have everything covered at least once in a while…………
This speaks to me so much, every time I see Luke perform I hassle him to play. I think every artist who feeds their families on the fruits of their creativity feels this from time to time. Alienation, having your energy drained, confidence sapped …. I can feel Luke speaking to me …
